Thomas Pearrow, affectionately known as the “Birdman of St. Augustine," is a lifelong artist, educator, and naturalist whose work reflects decades of dedication to both science and art.

His formal training began at the University of Florida, where he earned a degree in Biological Illustration. He further refined his craft under the guidance of acclaimed artists Richard Sloan and Don Eckelberry, building a strong foundation in both watercolor and oil painting.
A pivotal influence in Tom’s life was master watercolorist Frederick Wetzel, who became his mentor at the age of sixteen. Their relationship grew into a remarkable 50-year friendship and artistic partnership that shaped Tom’s approach to painting and lifelong pursuit of excellence.
His work has been recognized and commissioned by respected organizations such as the Wilson Ornithological Society, including a painting of the endangered Snail Kite. His artwork has appeared in various publications and is held in private collections across the United States.
In addition to his artistic career, Tom spent 17 years as a middle school science teacher, where he inspired students to explore both the sciences and the arts. A natural teacher at heart, he continues to share his knowledge and passion by helping others develop their own artistic skills.
Tom’s work is defined by a unique balance, which combines the analytical eye of a scientist, the expressive hand of a painter, and a deep reverence for the natural world.
From his earliest days, Thomas possessed an insatiable curiosity and wonder for the natural world. While he was fascinated by all aspects of the outdoors, birds captured his attention in a way nothing else could.

That childhood fascination never faded. To this day, Tom keeps a camera, binoculars, or sketchpad close at hand, as he is always ready for an unexpected moment of connection with wildlife.
His passion led him far beyond observation. Over the years, Tom has rehabilitated countless orphaned and injured birds, from delicate hummingbirds to powerful hawks. His journey also led him into the world of falconry, deepening his understanding of avian behavior, movement, and spirit.

This lifelong immersion in nature is the heartbeat of his artwork. Rather than focusing solely on precise anatomical detail, Tom seeks to capture the essence of a living creature from the fleeting interplay of light, movement, and emotion that defines a moment in the wild.

Each painting reflects not just what he sees, but what he feels. His work comes from a deep respect for all sorts of nature and a desire to help others feel connected to it.

nature.
Thomas Pearrow’s work is not simply about capturing what an animal looks like—it’s about capturing what it feels like to encounter it in the wild.

Through a thoughtful balance of light, shadow, and movement, his paintings draw the viewer into fleeting moments—a pause, a shift, a quiet presence that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Rather than focusing on rigid detail, Tom paints with intention, using value, color, and composition to create depth and life on the canvas. His approach invites the viewer to experience the subject, not just observe it.

Grounded in decades of studying wildlife as both an artist and naturalist, his work carries an authenticity that feels alive—resonating far beyond the surface.

For collectors, each piece offers more than beauty. It offers a connection—to nature, to stillness, and to the moments that often pass us by.

From First Brushstroke to Finished Work
Tom's Approach to Teaching
I teach my students the same way my teacher and mentor taught me. I use an immersive step-by-step approach. Rather than teach technicalities, I lead by example. I begin by showing my students how to transfer their sketch onto their watercolor paper or canvas. Then I demonstrate a small portion of the subject, showing them the proper brush stroke techniques and how to blend watercolors/oils to achieve the desired color. We discuss value scale and how the proper placement of lights, middle shades and darks achieve three-dimensions on a two- dimensional canvas. Once they are satisfied with that small section, we move onto to the next. Hands-on learning is the fasted and least intimidating way to become proficient in watercolors and oils.
Watercolors can be especially difficult to master. This easy going style of teaching allows each budding artist to relax and gain confidence. My students surprise themselves when they are able to create something beautiful on their very first painting. I feel honored to pass my knowledge onto others so they too can know the joy of painting.
